Safety For Women Drivers

It is vital that women feel safe while out on the roads, particularly if driving alone, it is late at night or they are somewhere they have not been before.

Precautions should be taken to avoid any type of incident. These can include obvious things such as locking doors and winding windows up to more hi-tech steps like carrying a personal alarm.

Women should remember that they need to protect their vehicle, possessions and themselves at all times while driving. Items such as handbags, laptops and phones should not be left lying on a seat or in the boot where an opportunist thief could grab them while the car is stopped at the lights. Tuck items under the seat or wrap the strap of a handbag or laptop case around the headrest, seat arms or gear stick, being careful not to obstruct anything. If larger items are kept in the boot, ensure it is always locked, and the same goes for doors.

If it is dark or you are in an unknown area think very carefully before getting out of the car or opening a window or door to speak to someone. If you have to pull over try to do so in a brightly lit area and if any assistance is needed look for a nearby shop.

When leaving the car, ensure it is locked and that any security devices such as immobilisers or alarms are activated. Keep your handbag or other personal belongings close to you and have a personal attack alarm to hand if you wish.

Always ensure your mobile phone is charged before setting off and keep items such as a blanket, bottle of water and a snack in the car should you get stuck. If you breakdown on a motorway pull on to the hard shoulder and leave the car safely to sit on the embankment and call for help. Avoid staying in the vehicle and take shelter by a bridge if possible.
